Another Saturday night on Riverside Drive in Downtown Memphis with gunfire. Late Saturday night, 3 people were shot, 2 in critical condition. While the security focus remains heavy on Beale Street, the street along the bluff has been the spot lately for shootings. This is the third shooting on Riverside Drive / Tom Lee Park in two weeks. As the area closes to begin prep for Riverbeat, there’re cnocerns about safety. Will those perpetrating the violence in the area be arrrested? Are these gang related? All questions that people considering giong downtown want answered.
Officers say they responded to Beale Street and South Second Street just before 1 a.m. According to a police report, the shooting appears to have stemmed from a disturbance involving two large groups hear Riverside Drive. A witness told officers they were riding scooters southbound when they heard a “loud commotion” and saw groups gathered both north and south of their location. The witness reported hearing around 10 to 12 gunshots before running toward Beale St.
Police say one victim was shot during the incident and taken to Regional One in critical condition by the Memphis Fire Department. While canvassing the area, officers found five 9mm shell casings in the northbound lanes of Riverside Dr. near Front Street.
Investigators later learned a second victim, also with a gunshot wound, was dropped off at Regional One by three men in a silver sedan. That victim was also in critical condition.
