Memphis-Shelby County School leaders vehemently opposed a potential state takeover of the district on Friday and presented a new plan to transform local schools.
County, city and school leaders stated in a press conference this morning that strengthening local schools is best done by local leaders.
“We do not need a state takeover. What we need is more accountability,” said Memphis City Council Chair JB Smiley Jr., who has publicly supported the plan.
Republican state senator Brent Taylor is already developing legislation to establish an appointed state oversight board for local schools, according to Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. The appointed board, according to Harris, would be a “disaster” for the local schools.
