According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, the man who has been accused of killing University of Memphis student Ava Christopher in a hit-and-run accident in 2023 entered a guilty plea to all charges on Tuesday.
The district attorney’s office said that Julio Hernandez pleaded guilty to the following charges:
- Disregarding a red light
- Failure to exercise due care
- Violation of financial law
- Leaving the scene of an accident involving death
- No driver’s license
- Reckless driving
- Vehicular homicide
According to Memphis Police, Hernandez, then 19 years old, was driving a Dodge Challenger in Midtown on July 25, 2023, at 88 mph in a 40 mph zone. Christopher was killed by her injuries when he struck her after running a red light.
Hernandez and another individual allegedly fled the area on foot. No details about the other individual involved were made public by the police.
The car was reported stolen from Southaven, Mississippi.
