The death of former NFL champion Barry Wilburn in an Orange Mound house fire early Friday morning was confirmed by the Washington Commanders over the weekend.
Following his graduation from Melrose High School, Wilburn attended the University of Mississippi to play football before being selected by the Washington Redskins in the 1985 NFL Draft.
He and the team won Super Bowl XXII against the Denver Broncos in 1988, before playing for the Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Early on Friday morning, workers from the Memphis Fire Department (MFD) were dispatched to an Orange Mound abandoned house fire.
They found Wilburn, who was declared dead at the scene after the fire was put out. The investigation is still ongoing.
