A woman from Fayette County pleaded guilty to receiving donations while falsely claiming to be a Marine Corps veteran.
Amanda Kate Walker Bass entered a guilty plea to one count of fraudulent use of military awards or stolen valor and one count of wire fraud.
According to court records, Bass claimed to be a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the only person who survived an enemy ambush in Afghanistan in 2010, which left her seriously injured.
According to the office, Bass never really served in the military.
Instead, she made money off of the “fictitious narrative” by creating a GoFundMe page and taking donations and other benefits from the fake story.
Bass could be facing up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for the wire fraud conviction, as well as up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine for the fraudulent use of military medals conviction.
She is expected to be sentenced by a judge on May 14, 2026.
