MDOT says it’s too early to predict when all lanes will be cleared as workers continue to remove ice from I-22, I-55, and Highway 72.
One of their major concerns is black ice forming on the roadways, causing more delays for crews and drivers.
According to David Kenney of the Mississippi Department of Transportation, “this storm will probably go down in the history books for how much ice we received in Mississippi.”
Kenney also noted that although MDOT initiated the biggest salt brine pretreatment in its history, there was only so much they could do.
Drivers are still urged to stay at home while MDOT works to clear the roads, and they want to remind drivers that the emergency travel declaration is still in effect.

Thank you to all of our many employees who have been working in treacherous conditions – away from their families – to clear Mississippi highways. #MShws #MSwx #Fern pic.twitter.com/vvWC6zzbxZ
