On Thursday, the governor of Tennessee pardoned country music artist Jelly Roll for his criminal history.
For years, the rapper-turned-singer, whose real name is Jason Deford, has testified before concert-goers, prisoners, and even Congress about how he overcame a dark past.
“His story is remarkable, and it’s a redemptive, powerful story, which is what you look for and what you hope for,” Gov. Lee told reporters.
Robbery and drug offenses were among Jelly Roll’s convictions. He was one of 33 individuals who received pardons on Thursday from Lee, who has been making decisions on clemency around the Christmas season for years.
Lee’s office said no one was pardoned Thursday who had a homicide or a sex-related conviction, or for any crime committed as an adult against a minor.
