Sheldon Timothy Herrington, the man who pled guilty to murdering University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee, received a 40-year sentence while in court on Tuesday morning.
For the second-degree murder charge, the judge sentenced Herrington to 40 years with 10 years suspended, meaning he will serve 30 years.
Herrington was given a 10-year sentence for the tampering charge, which will be served in tandem with the second-degree murder charge.
This comes after Herrington was scheduled to have a jury selection on Monday, but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and tampering in connection with Lee’s death instead.
