The Memphis Police Department’s (MPD) speed limit cameras issued almost 1,500 warnings in their first month of operation.
At the end of September, the MPD installed 30 speed limit cameras at 15 locations. Between September 30 and October 30, the police department granted a grace period only issuing warnings instead of tickets. Since October 31, that grace period has ended.
Drivers may now be fined $50 if they are found exceeding the speed limit in specific areas by more than seven miles per hour.
The cameras take pictures of a car’s license plates and transmit them to an officer via secure video. After watching the video, an officer decides whether to issue a citation.
