The Memphis-Shelby County School board unanimously approved a resolution calling for an emergency plan and enhanced bus services to help students get to and from campus securely as issues about arrests by the Memphis Safe Task Force related to immigration escalate.
It was passed after almost 20 immigrant and Latino advocates asked the board to adopt resolutions shielding students from Task Force activities.
Students who reside in designated parent responsibility zones are now eligible for bus service because of the adopted resolution, which also gives Interim Superintendent Roderick Richmond the authority to create the emergency plan.
Board chair Natalie McKinney commended the board for taking action.
“This has been, as you’ve heard from the many people who came and talked to us,” McKinney said. “This is something we have not ever experienced; most of us have not experienced it in our lifetime. And so I’m very happy that we could do this for the community.”
