Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert’s counsel announced Tuesday that she will appeal Monday’s Appeals Court decision on an ouster attempt against her to the state Supreme Court.
Halbert and her attorney attended a news conference the day after the Tennessee Court of Appeals overturned a lower court’s decision to dismiss the county attorney’s removal proceedings against her.
She also claims her office never had a lease with Millington and was not involved in the discussions for the office space. She contends that the county is responsible for paying the clerk’s office lease.
State and local political leaders have repeatedly tried to remove Halbert from office since she was elected in 2018 after several complaints about lengthy lines at the clerk’s office and branch office closures.
Following months of submitting erroneous revenue reports, Halbert’s office was temporarily moved to the state comptroller’s office last year.
