According to the U.S. Marshals Service, a criminal who admitted to being a part of a street gang in Memphis was arrested by the Memphis Safe Task Force for weapons possession.
Federal charges of felon in possession of a firearm were brought against 28-year-old Barrington J. Harwell, a member of the Vice Lords gang.
Harwell was arrested at a time when new data shows that Memphis has seen a decline in crime reports since the Memphis Safe Task Force began.
According to the Department of Justice, the task force has collected more than 200 firearms and made close to 1,200 arrests in recent weeks. Additionally, dozens of missing children have been found.
The monthly data shows that 1,451 crimes were reported in October, and in September, 3,085 crimes were reported.
Homicides are also down by 50% compared to September, and car thefts and sexual assaults have dropped by more than 60%.
