Tennessee Governor Bill Lee visited the Memphis Safe Task Force operations center to give an update. To date the task force agencies have made 850 arrests. This number included many violent gang members, 175 illegal weapons seized and 44 missing children have been recovered and returned to safety. David Rausch, Director of TBI says his agency has been focusing on the missing children component of the task force and identified 137 when the task force started. Rausch says a majority of the missing children are runaways.
Mayor Paul Young shared a text he received that encouraged him.
“There was a teacher at a school in Frayser who texted me that she had a conversation with some of her fifth graders who lived in an apartment complex in the area, and in that apartment complex, there have been forces of this operation taking place. And those fifth graders came to her and said that they were really excited because they’re now going to be able to play outside all fall.”
