Bodycam footage of Shelby County’s General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer’s encounter with police enforcement went viral on social media on Thursday, prompting the Shelby County Republican Party to demand her resignation.
Sawyer was captured shouting and using profane language with officers outside the county courthouse downtown on October 7.
In the video, which was shared on the social media sites of Sen. Brent Taylor and other local Republicans, she said that the cops’ friends were white supremacists.
According to Taylor, Sawyer attempted to facilitate her private security into bringing a gun inside the courthouse.
“The Republican Party of Shelby County calls for Tami Sawyer’s immediate resignation as General Sessions Court Clerk and for condemnation of her actions by all responsible leaders. Furthermore, the Republican Party is actively exploring recall options to hold her accountable should she not resign, as such conduct is wholly inappropriate and incompatible with public office,” the group said in a statement.
