Despite Memphis City Councilwoman Jerri Green’s failed resolution asking Governor Bill Lee not to deploy National Guard, not only are the troops coming, but Gov. Lee announced an additional $100 million dollar grant to fight crime in Memphis as “Operation Memphis Safe Task Force” arrives in full.
“A Force Multiplier” is what the Governor called the deployment of the National Guard during a press conference today announcing the plans. From our local news content partner, the Guard is expected as early as next week.

Governor Lee says the Tennessee National Guard will serve a critical support role to local law enforcement as a “force multiplier” alongside the Memphis Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. He says this is a long-term strategy and will occur in phases over the next weeks and months.
He also announced that Memphis will receive a $100 million grant from the state for additional resources and public safety initiatives.
Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis says there will be 13 agencies working alongside law enforcement in Memphis over the next few weeks. Governor Lee added that they will begin coming on Monday and will be amped up as the week goes on.
