According to the City of Millington, County Clerk Wanda Halbert owes taxpayers over $30,000 and hasn’t paid rent on her Millington branch office since 2023.
The statement from Millington City Manager Frankie Dakin comes a day after the clerk’s Whitehaven branch closed indefinitely after a report of possible mold, the third branch office to close in recent years.
On Wednesday, a sign in the door of the clerk’s office at 4122 Elvis Presley Boulevard in Whitehaven indicated that it was closed. On Thursday, it was still shuttered.
State Sen. Brent Taylor criticized Halbert in a social media post:
“Apparently all employees called off sick because of ‘suspected mold.’ I don’t know what exactly is going on, but what I do know is Shelby County residents should be able to get their damn car tags,” Taylor said.
