A resolution urging the governor to stop the National Guard’s arrival in Memphis was not approved by the city council on Tuesday night, despite some public opposition.
The resolution, which would allow the council attorney to take whatever necessary legal action to resist the National Guard’s takeover in Memphis, was supported by around two dozen people.
It also urged Governor Bill Lee to reject President Donald Trump’s plan to send National Guard troops into Memphis.
Members of the council agreed that while the resolution would not have stopped the National Guard from traveling to Memphis, it would have given them the legal right to file suit against the Guard if it had violated the Constitution once it was there.
