Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) has instituted a cell phone ban policy in accordance with a recent Tennessee state law.
This policy mandates that students keep their cell phones and other personal communication devices out of sight and powered off during the school day, with the exception of certain situations for emergencies, health, or educational purposes.
The ban aims to reduce distractions, improve learning, and address concerns related to cheating, bullying, and inappropriate photos, aligning with a broader trend of restricting cell phone use in schools nationwide.
This bill was unanimously approved by the state in the spring of 2025. However, districts retain the authority to determine the specifics and address infractions.
