LOCAL | Memphis Airport To Be Renamed In Honor Of FedEx Founder, Fred Smith

A proposal to rename the Memphis airport in honor of Frederick W. Smith, the creator of FedEx, was accepted by the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority board Thursday morning.

Smith passed away at the age of 80 last Saturday.

He started FedEx, a multinational shipping company with its headquarters located at the Memphis airport.

“We are honored to be tasked with this well-deserved recognition for him. There are many regulatory, logistical and operational steps involved in renaming an airport, but our staff will immediately begin the process,” the airport board said in a news release.
