Shelby county commissioners passed the budget for the next fiscal year after working late into last night.
After completing a 72-item agenda, commissioners adjourned shortly after 11 p.m. In the end, Mayor Lee Harris’ $1.7 billion spending plan was approved and there will not be an increase in property taxes.
Shelby County’s current tax rate is $3.39 for every $100 of assessed value. With Harris’ proposal, it would drop to $2.69.
On July 1, the budget will become active.
“I do not think this is the time with the inflation rate and with the struggles our county is already having. I do think we have a bright future. I feel certain we do. I think we’re gonna have more revenue next year, but I would say it would be wise to accept the budget as it is and move forward next year with higher funding levels,” said Commissioner Brandon Morrison.
