TBI has stepped in to investigate an officer involved shooting after MPD say a driver in Orange Mound accelerated towards police who were on foot approaching his car.
Our local news partner, WREG reports MPD was patrolling in the area of Park Avenue and Grand Street at 9:50 p.m. Friday when they observed what appeared to be a suspicious vehicle, a Nissan Armada.
Officers walked up to the vehicle, but when the driver saw them, he’s accused of accelerating and driving into one of the officers, in what they say appeared to be an intentional act. That’s when another officer fired his weapon, hitting the man.
The suspect was transported to Regional One in critical condition, while the officer who was hit by the speeding car was transported in non-critical condition.
The Armada was also involved in a crash with another vehicle as it tried to flee. That driver was transported to Baptist East, but was later released.
