LOCAL | Recap Of City Council’s $900 Million Budget For 2026

The city’s nearly $900 million fiscal year 2026 budget, which contained no tax increases and a 3% pay rise for city employees, was approved by the city council on Tuesday night.

Councilwoman Pearl Eva Walker pushed for the compromise 3% hike.

The Memphis Area Transit Authority will get two payments from the city: $15 million up front and the remaining $15 million in a fund.

Some members of the public were hauled out of City Hall during a contentious public comment session during the MATA vote after demanding more funding for MATA than the $30 million allotted by the budget.
