In order to prevent information gathered from the Department of Justice’s investigation of the Memphis Police Department from being used in the $550 million lawsuit Tyre Nichols’ family filed against the city, the City of Memphis has filed a “motion for protective order.”
City lawyers claim that those findings are no longer relevant in light of the $550 million lawsuit that Tyre Nichols’ mother, Rowvaughn Wells, filed.
The civil rights investigation of MPD’s patterns and practices was terminated late last month, and no further action or threat of legal action will be taken.
The city wants the information sealed and prohibited from use now that the investigation has been dropped.
