LOCAL | DHS Names Shelby County Among List Of Sanctuary Jurisdictions

Shelby County has been listed by the Department of Homeland Security as one of the “sanctuary jurisdictions” that violate federal immigration law.

Information limitations, legal safeguards for illegal aliens, and compliance with federal law enforcement were among the criteria used by DHS to develop the list of sanctuary jurisdictions that was made public on Thursday.

No cities or counties in Arkansas or Mississippi were included in the list of more than 500 local governments, and Nashville was the only other Tennessee jurisdiction.

“Each jurisdiction listed will receive formal notification of its non-compliance with Federal statutes,” the agency wrote. “DHS demands that these jurisdictions immediately review and revise their policies to align with Federal immigration laws and renew their obligation to protect American citizens, not dangerous illegal aliens.”

Mayor Paul Young maintains his position that Memphis is separate from the county and that Memphis is” not a sanctuary city”.
