Edmund Ford Jr., a Shelby County Commissioner, returned to federal court on Tuesday morning.
This comes after Ford Jr. was accused of six counts of attempted tax evasion, bribes and kickbacks involving federal funding. In February, he was indicted.
According to the 17-page indictment, Ford Jr. is charged with “corruptly” accepting money from the three unnamed non-profits after using his public position to get grant funds for them. Ford Jr. made a not-guilty plea.
Ford Jr. is currently free on bond after turning in his passport.
Since then, he has attended Shelby County Commission meetings. He is scheduled to return to Federal Court on July 21, for a trial.
