LOCAL | Over 300 Correctional Deputy Positions Opening For County’s Jail System

Due to vacancies in the county’s jail system, 335 correctional deputies are being sought by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

The hiring takes place at a time when the sheriff’s office is experiencing shortages of staff.

Correctional deputies begin earning more than $48,000 a year, and after five years, their salaries increase to $62,000.

They also receive overtime possibilities, a $5,000 signing bonus, and reimbursement for their college tuition.

Although they do not have to reside in Shelby County, applicants must be at least eighteen and possess a current driver’s license.

According to Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner, the system at 201 Poplar required an additional 58 to 60 officers. About 280 inmates are being housed in jail east, 100 in juvenile court, and 2,540 in the jail itself.
