Immaculate Conception, a Catholic school in Midtown that has been standing for more than a century, has announced they will be fully closing at the end of the school year.
The school has been in Memphis since 1922, but since then, low enrollments in recent years has been a major strain on the operating costs.
This all follows the closing of their high school in 2020 during the pandemic.
Currently, the school operates for preschool students up until the eighth grade. In a statement released by the school, Father Robert Szczechura expressed their tough decision to close.
“We prayed often, and our school board, parents, and parish leaders met many times to collaborate on all possibilities from several angles to keep the school open,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, the ongoing lack of financial stability and our constant struggle with enrollment made it impossible for the parish to continue operating the school.”
